Einiges steht bevor. Eine Reise in die USA und ein mehrtägiger Workshop bei Microsoft in Redmond. Es freut mich sehr viele Freunde erneut zu sehen. Die letzte grössere internationale Konferenz ist schon einige Monate her. Obwohl Seattle Supersonics zweimal in der Woche spielen, werde ich wahrscheinlich nicht dazu kommen. Nun, es soll auch ganz gute Restaurants in Seattle für den gemeinsamen Ausklang des Abends geben.

Gleich danach folgt die CeBIT 2006 in Hannover. Wie in den vergangenen Jahren stellt Axinom die neueste Version 6.0 der kostenfreien ECM-Plattform AxCMS.net vor. In diesem Jahr erweitert um die Themen Document Management, Workflow Management und Collaboration. Das neue AxCMS.net Partnerprogramm sowie natürlich auch das gesamte Portfolio (Architektur- und Technologieberatung, Software-Entwicklung, Integration, Projekt Management, IT-Oursourcing und Hosting) von Axinom werden vorgestellt. Im vergangenen Jahr konnten wir mit dem Gewinn des Microsoft Strategic Win Awards 2005 und einem regem Interesse an unserer ECM-Plattform eine erfolgreiche Messeteilnahme verzeichnen und wir hoffen, dies auch in diesem Jahr zu wiederholen. Wir sind in der Halle 4, A38, Standnummer 28 zu finden. Ich werde die meiste Zeit dort verbringen.

Gleich danach geht es nach Frankreich, in die Provence im Hinterland von Nizza zur nächsten Konferenz auf die Einladung von Microsoft EMEA. Wenn das Wetter mitspielt, werden die wenigen Tage an der Côte d'Azur für alle Strapazen entschädigen.

Bei der Betrachtung von SOA (und Web Services) im Unternehmen spielen sog. "maturity models" eine wichtige Rolle. Diese Betrachtung ist eine Abwendlung der Betrachtung der Unternehmensarchitektur, die dazu dienen soll, ein Unternehmen vom retroaktiven zum proaktiven zu wandeln und geeignete Strategie vorzuschlagen. Pattern Languages of Programs conference (PLoP, to be held in Portland Oregon, October 21-23, in conjunction with OOPSLA’06) is a place for pattern authors to have their pattern languages reviewed by fellow authors. This occurs in Writer's Workshops and the feedback allows the participants to improve their patterns to make them more useful and more publishable. The purpose of PloP is to promote development of pattern languages on all aspects of software, including design and programming, software architecture, user interface design, domain modeling, and software process. Domain-specific patterns are encouraged.

The EnterpriseArchitecturalSpaceOrganizingTable in is a two-dimensional table that captures and organizes business artifacts according to the decisions that produce them. Business artifacts could include plans, notes, models, scripts, code, or other items that different roles in your enterprise use to make decisions and view the enterprise architecture in different ways.

The organizing table builds on earlier work of Zachman, Andersen Consulting, and test-driven development to produce a highly granular map of the enterprise space that is organized by viewpoints, roles, and interrogatives.

John deVadoss hat sich in seiner Keynote [1] auf der VSLive! mit der sog. Edge-Architektur (keine Architektur am Rande und auch keine Randerscheinung) beschäftigt. Darryl Taft in eWeek und Paul Krill in InfoWorld haben das Thema SOA und Web 2.0 in einem gemeinsamen Kontext diskutiert. Dion Hinchcliffe in ZDNet dagegen beschäftigt sich mit SPARK, einem brandaktuellen "high-level enterprise architecture forum" von Microsoft und dem mapping zwischen SOA, Software as a Service (SaaS) und Web 2.0.

Die Begriffe werden immer mehr zu kontextsensitiven Containern. Wie man diese füllt, entscheidet sich vor Ort.

Die Highlights der VSLive! Konferenz in San Francisco vom 29.01. bis 02.02.2006 wären für mich die Themenbereiche ASPLive! [1] und Software Architecture Summit [2]. Beide Themenbereiche glänzen mit sehr interessanten Vortragenden: Pat Helland (jetzt bei Amazon) mit "Architecting for Scalability", die Panel-Diskussion über "Motion", Andrew Brust mit "Data Binding in ASP.NET" oder David Chappel "Building Modern Software: Services, Workflow, Integration".

Simon Guest [1], Microsoft Architecture Strategy Team, is a new Editor, taking over the responsibility from Arvindra Sehmi, lead architect Microsoft EMEA, who originally founded this magazine back in January 2004 with a simple goal - to provide compelling, thought provoking and high quality articles to IT architects worldwide.

The desires of the clever vizier seemed very modest. "Majesty", he said kneeling in front of the king, "give me a grain of wheat to put on the first square of this chessboard, and two grains to put on the second square, and four grains to put on the third, and eight grains to put on the fourth. And so, oh King, doubling the number for each succeeding square, give me enough grains to cover all 64 squares of the board."

"You do not ask for much, oh my faithful servant," exclaimed the king, silently enjoying the thought that his liberal proposal of a gift to the inventor of the miraculous game would not cost him much of his treasure. "Your wish will certainly be granted". And he ordered a bag of wheat to be brought to the throne. But when the counting began, with 1 grain for the first square, 2 for the second, 4 for the third and so forth, the bag was emptied before the twentieth square was accounted for. Many bags of wheat were brought before the king but the number of grains needed for each succeeding square increased so rapidly that it soon became clear that with all the crop of India the king cold not fulfill his promise to Sisa Ben. To do so would have required 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains, an equivalent of world’s wheat production for the period of some two thousand years! 

There is a parallel to an IT architecture problem of the 21st century – business process integration. Throughout the past two decades, enterprises spent time in creating silos of internet applications. Now enterprises are faced with not only needing to create new applications but also face the daunting task of integrating the existing ones. Every time you invest in creating an IT application, it is very likely that the application needs to be integrated with the existing and new applications. If there are 200 existing applications in an enterprise then the number of possible connections among the 200 applications is n(n-1) i.e. 200*(200-1) = 39800 two way connections. Obviously the end result is not a pretty picture.

Lesson: Every time you add a new application to your enterprise portfolio, think of the n(n-1) scenario; sooner or later it can assume monstrous proportions and bite you!

Ehrwürdiger John A. Zachman fing damit an, nun begab sich daraufhin seit einigen Jahren die Gemeinschaft auf die Suche nach einer allgemeinen Definition für die Beschreibung von IT-Strukturen, Standards, Schnittstellen und gemeinsamen Diensten - zusammengefasst hinter dem Begriff "Enterprise Architecture". Mit Hilfe dieser Definition soll sich der effiziente Einsatz von neuen Investitionen und somit eine direkte Unterstützung der Geschäftszielen eines Unternehmens verdeutlichen und erklären lassen.

Es handelt sich in jedem Fall um eine ganzheitliche Architektursicht, die Skalierbarkeit, Reaktionsfähigkeit, Schnelligkeit und strategische Weitsicht gewährleistet. Eine Vielzahl von Definitionen begleitet diesen, wie viele andere Begriffe auch.

Laut Enterprise Architecture Advisory Group des "US Department of Commerce" gilt folgende Definition:

"...An Enterprise IT Architecture (EITA) is a blueprint that explains how the results of Strategic Planning, Performance Planning, Budgeting, Capital Planning and Investment Control, Security and Privacy, Acquisition, and other related IT and general management processes work together to meet the enterprise's mission and objectives._ It is a process and an integrated framework...."

Laut Institute for Enterprise Architecture Developments dagegen:

"...Enterprise Architecture (EA) is about understanding all of the different elements that go to make up the enterprise and how those elements interrelate..."

Ruth Malan, Bredemeyer Consulting, erklärt:

"... An enterprise is made up of many interacting systems of various kinds. Enterprise Architecture identifies these systems, their key properties, and their interrelationships, and plans for and guides the evolution of the enterprise systems to support and enable the evolution of the enterprise in its pursuit of strategic advantage. ..."

und definiert ganz pragmatisch ...

"... Enterprise Architecture is fundamentally a "system of systems" architecture, while software architecture is a "system of components" architecture ..."

Eines ist sicher: die Entscheider in kleinen Unternehmen werden sich sofort angesprochen fühlen: "Kenn isch, mach isch doch mit links... ". src="smilies/wink.gif">

Prof. Dr. Pepper von der TU-Berlin erklärt: "Die Produktion von Software hoher Qualität wird durch die geeignete Verwendung von formalen Methoden gefördert. Diese Herangehensweise erfordert die präzise Spezifikation der Anforderungen sowie die korrektheitserhaltende Ableitung einer Implementierung." Klingt akademisch, ist aber so.

Um die heutigen Modellierungsansätze besser verstehen zu können, bietet sich der Einstieg in die Vorgehensweise zur Beschreibung von Anforderungs- und Entwurfsspezifikationen mit den Schriften [1] bis [4] des Professor Dr, Medvidović am Center for Software Engineering der University of Southern California (USC).

Am 24.11.2005 fand erneut das Microsoft Architectsforum [1] im Kempinski-Hotel am Münchner Flughafen statt. Eine wirklich gelungene Veranstaltung mit mehr als 400 Anmeldungen. Andreas Hartl, Enterprise Lead bei Microsoft Deutschland, und Arvindra Sehmi, Solutions Architekt bei Microsoft EMEA, eröffneten die Konferenz mit einer interessanten Keynote "The Microsoft Platform: Changing the Rules of Systems Architecture". Arvindra ist vielen sicherlich nicht nur von der TechEd, sondern auch als Gründungsvater des Microsoft Architects Journals in Erinnerung geblieben. Tenor der Veranstaltung war die Service Orientierung und Connected Systems - die Microsoft Antwort auf SOA. Am Ende der Veranstaltung stand die Entmystifizierung von EDA, ESB und ähnlichen TLA's an der Tagesordnung. Eine ganze Reihe sehr guter Sprecher, die eigens für diese Veranstaltung vorbereitete Vorträge vorgetragen haben. Keine Wiederholung der TechEd oder PDC-Folien. Also, es geht doch. src="smilies/wink.gif">

Zum ersten Mal war auch IASA [2] mit einem eigenem Stand vor Ort. Ich hatte viele wirklich interessante Gespräche und konnte ein reges Interesse an der Thematik sowie an der IASA erfahren. Die Besucher verlangten nach den Inhalten für Architekten rund um die Themenbereiche Interoperabilität, Modellierung, Infrastruktur und Prozesse. In vielen Unternehmen spielt die IT-Architektur zunehmend eine gewichtige Rolle, die Architekten sind die wichtigsten Berater der Entscheider, die Strategie eines Unternehmens maßgeblich beeinflußen. In so einem Ecosystem als IT-Architekt zu bestehen, sich zu behaupten und eine richtige Entscheidung zu treffen ist alles andere als einfach. Eine wünschenswerte Ausgangssituation für IASA, die sich als eine Dachorganisation zum Ziel gesetzt hat genau hier die Hilfestellung zu leisten - durch die wertvollen Inhalte, Empfehlungen und Definitionen, durch die Vernetzung, Arbeitsgruppen und diverse Vorteile für die Mitglieder.

Da ich leider einen wichtigen Vortrag zur gleichen Zeit hatte, konnte ich nicht zur Enterprise Architektur Konferenz fahren. Dennoch wurde IASA [1]auf der Konferenz sichtbar und bestens vertreten. Mein IASA Kollege Dr. Frederik Schlenker hatte seinen Auftritt beim BOF [1] "Architektur - eine Frage des Stils?" sowie mit einem Vortrag zum Thema "Enterprise Architecture Management". Frederik vertritt die Region DACH der IASA e.V. (International Association of Software Architects).

Wie eWeek bereits berichtete [1] wird Microsoft weiterhin die Agile Methodologien, wie eXtreme Programming und Scrum unterstützen. Und nun wies mich David Boschmans darauf hin, dass Ivar Jacobson [2], einer der drei Amigos neben Grady Booch und James Rumbaugh und Vater von RUP (Rational Unified Process), die Entwicklung eines lightweight unified Prozesses für Microsoft Solutions Framework leiten [3] wird. Jacobson berichtet selbst, RUP sei heavyweight und bedarf einiger Veränderungen und Verbesserungen: ""RUP is one of my babies, and babies grow up, and some of them need correction.". Als Vorlage für die Entwicklung nutzt Jacobson einige aspekt-orientierte Ideen auf einer völlig neuer Prozessarchitektur. Die Implementierung erfolgt mit MSF und VSTS.

Nach drei erfolgreichen Veranstaltungen in USA, findet EAS 2005 (Enterprise Architecture Summit) vom 6. bis 8. November nun auch in Barcelona statt. Es sprechen wieder namhafte Industriexperten zu diversen Architekturthemen (Extensible SOA Infrastructure, Security - Key IT Challenges, Facilitating Agility in Enterprises for Real World Business Problems etc.) in mehreren Breakout Sessions (Strategy and Best Practices), Keynotes, Workshops und Panel Diskussionen. IASA Mitglieder erhalten Ermässigung für den Eintritt und sogar einige Freikarten, die bei den Chapter Meetings verlost wurden. In jedem Fall ist IASA nicht nur als Partner, sondern auch mit zahlreichen Vertretern vor Ort.

Und was lernt man daraus? Reverse Engineering führt nicht unbedingt zum Ziel.

Wenn ich an mein Thema der Software-Qualität und der Prozesse anknüpfe, kann ich zwei ganz nützliche Workshops empfehlen: "MSF for Agile Software Development" [1] und "MSF for CMMI® Process Improvement" [2]. Um den Einstieg in die Thematik einfacher zu finden, hat David Anderson, Erfinder von FDD (Feature Driven Development), eine nette Einführung "Agile or CMMI" [3] geboten.

Es war einer dieser Gespräche, an die man sich länger erinnert. Jürgen Pfeifer (Enterprise Technologieberater, Microsoft) und ich arbeiten gemeinsam an einem Projekt und haben uns diesbezüglich am Donnerstag getroffen. Hinterher unterhielten wir uns bis spät am Abend über diverses, spannendes und interessantes. Jürgen, ein studierter Mathematiker, hat sich mit der Fragestellung der Eleganz von Software beschäftigt und eine sehr interessante Theorie entwickelt. Ich muß zugeben mir darüber kaum Gedanken gemacht zu haben, die Fragestellung ist aber wirklich mehr als interessant. Jürgen hat es auch kurz in seinem Blog beschrieben [1]. Ich beschäftigte mich mit einem anderem Thema - in jedem Projekt beispielsweise ist eine gewisse Qualität der Software gefordert, es existieren auch diverse Ansätze diese zu erreichen. Wenn wir einen der Ansätze nehmen und die Parameter, wie die verfügbare Zeit und das verfügbare Budget varrieren, ergeben sich dann zwangsläufig Einbüße in der Qualität? Ab wann? Wohin tendieren die Ansätze dann? Ein Thema, das ich auch auf der BASTA! in einer Podiumsdiskussion mit dem Publikum diskutiert habe.

Wir haben auch unsere gemeinsame Unix-Vergangenheit entdeckt. Jürgen ist unter anderem einer der initialen Autoren der ncurses-Bibliothek [2], gemeinsam mit Zeyd Ben-Halim und Eric Raymond, die Namen kennt die OSS-Szene mehr als gut. Ich war Anfang neunziger Jahre an der Entwicklung von UnixWare [3] beteiligt, als dies noch ein Projekt von Novell war, noch bevor es 1995 an SCO verkauft wurde. Mein Schwerpunkt bildete das Spooling-System [4]. Das war eine lustige Zeit, alles schön in ANSI-C geschrieben, mit vi und gescriptet mit kornshell. Ich glaube, ich kann vi auch heute noch blind bedienen, so etwas vergisst man nie wieder ... src="smilies/wink.gif">

Wir erinnerten uns daran, dass Linux eigentlich als eine Antwort auf die "bösen" teueren Unix-Systeme (Sun Solaris, Unisys, SINIX, HP-UX, etc.) entwickelt wurde ... Da diese heute kaum eine Rolle in der Presse spielen, vergisst man so etwas natürlich leichter...

Es hat wirklich Spaß gemacht.

Das Buch "Framework Design Guidelines" [1] von Brad Abrams [2] und Krzysztof Cwalina [3] bietet nicht nur eine gelungene Übersicht der Design Guidelines aus der ersten Hand, sondern auch diverse Kommentare von den Entwicklern und den Architekten des .NET Frameworks. Liest sich gut, ist nützlich, sollte in den Regalen nicht fehlen.

News: the IASA is preparing to launch a series of Knowledge Communities alongside the new website. Knowledge Communities are pools of specific content around a specific architecture topic maintained by experts in that field. Some planned communities for 2005 include:

• Web Frameworks - Architecture Building Block

Imagine having a place to go which maintains the most relevant content, links, and resources for the problems you encounter on a daily basis. "I can't tell you how many times I had to write persistence option comparisons for projects at different companies.", said an IASA member in Austin. "Everytime I would do the same thing, EJB vs. POJO Frameworks vs. JDBC." Well we hope to at least ease the burden.

OMG just announced the draft white paper [1] describing joint effort to develop a formal, model-driven, industry-independent, standards-based enterprise architecture development methodology; a framework for enterprise architectures; and an information sharing framework. This whitepaper provides a mapping between the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) and OMG's Model Driven Architecture (MDA). An earlier white paper [2] at provides the background and rationale to this project.

I used the time in Malaysia to speak a lot with Aaron Tan Dani (Architect Evangelist, Microsoft), Simon Seow (managing director of InfoSpec) and Lim Fun Jin (Microsoft Regional Director Malaysia, Technical Director of ISA Technologies). Those guys are co-founder of Independent Software Architects Council of Malaysia (ISAC-M) [1], a special interest group (SIG) of the Malaysian-National Computer Confederation (MNCC). They are doing such a amazing job over there. More than 200 IT architects and technical decision makers participated in the inaugural Summit. Membership in ISAC-M is strictly by invitation and the Council meets once every quarter.

I'd like to quote Aaron and spread the good news among you: "We are confident that our efforts in Malaysia will be even more effective with our official affiliation to the International Association of Software Architects (IASA)". Obwohl trendige Themen behandelt werden, wie z.B. "AJAX Based Web Applications" von Steffen Meschkat (Google, New York, USA), sind auch recht interessante Vorträge auf der Agenda der NET.ObjectDay Konferenz [1] in Erfurt vom 19.-22. September 2005. Mein Favorit wäre der Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Andreas Rausch zum Thema "DoSAM – Domain Specific Software Architecture Comparison Model". Es freut mich auch sehr zu sehen, dass meine Uni (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg [2]) auch im Bereich Distributed Systems weiter forscht. Wasif Gilani und Olaf Spinczyk sprechen zum Thema "Dynamic Aspect Weaver Family for Family-based Adaptable Systems". Frank Fischer, Manager Developer Evangelist bei Microsoft Deutschland, erläutert die Vision von Microsoft zum Thema Software Factories. Mehr darüber im IASA Newsletter 2nd edition [3].

We'd like to introduce the latest newsletter, newly title Perspectives of the IASA. This edition provides a detailed acount of the MDA and Software Factories as well as Systems Architecture. Also look for the details of the newest IASA working group which is defining the future of our profession. The newsletter is put together by an expert editorial staff made up of thought leaders and practicing architects and is authored by IASA members and speakers.

Nichts ist beständiger als die Veränderung, daher sind die Unternehmen ständig gezwungen ihre strategischen Planungen und organisatorischen Abläufe dem Marktumfeld anzupassen. Die wechselnden Anforderungen führen in der Regel zu divergenten Konzepten und Implementierungen. Die traditionelle Industrie hat schon lange gelernt, dass eine einheitliche Empfehlung dabei hilft entstandene Lücken zu schließen und die Leistungsfähigkeit der Infrastruktur zu steigern. Es ist notwendig die aggregierte Modelle des Gesamtzusammenhangs komplexer Systeme zu verstehen und entsprechende Gestaltungsprinzipien zu definieren. Richard spricht in diesem Zusammenhang von einem "Architectural Style" und führt diesen beispielhaft am Konzept der Convergent Architecture (CA, ein einheitliches Modell für Business- und Softwaresysteme) vor. Obgleich das Buch eine konkrete Implementierung mit J2EE* exemplarisch darstellt, liegt der Mehrwert des Buches in einer praxisorientierten Anwendung von Model Driven Architecture (MDA) wie beschrieben in der ersten Hälfte des Buches. Für die Freunde der Software Factories ein unverzichtbares Begleitwerk.

*) Ich weiss. Aber, ich darf auch mal ein Buch mit Java/J2EE empfehlen.

* Semantics could be defined as the relationships of characters or groups of characters to their meanings, independent of the manner of their interpretation and use. Contrast with syntax.
** An ontology is a specification of a conceptualization.

Die Begriffe "Architektur" und "Design" in der Informatik werden oft dazu verwendet, die Struktur einer Anwendung oder die eines Systems zu beschreiben. Dabei wird oft das Design mit der Architektur gleichgesetzt. Die Softwarearchitektur wird in dem IEEE 1471 2000-Standard [1] so definiert:

"The fundamental organization of a system embodied in its components, their relationships to each other and to the environment and the principles guiding its design and evolution.".

Aus dieser Definition, obgleich die nicht ausreichend ist, wird eines ersichtlich: die Architektur legt die Vision (nicht funktionale Entscheidungen) fest, das Design realisiert die Ideen und Anliegen der Architektur ("guiding its design.."). Das Design ist also wesentlich konkreter, es ist ein Teil des Implementierungsprozesses. Viele Design-Entscheidungen sind mit der gewählten Technologie verbunden und für die Architektur nicht relevant. Die Abstraktion muß erhalten bleiben. Desweiteren ist die Architektur kein Werb, "to architect" existiert in der englischen Sprache genauso wenig wie woanders.

Eine recht einfache Übersicht "From Architecture to Design" [2] erläutert diese Problematik und führt direkt zur Frage nach den Sprachen zur Beschreibung der Architektur. Eine einfache Definition verbindet alle Ansätze:

"ADLs (Architecture Description Languages) are languages that describe Software Architectures. This means in case of Technical architecture refers to the structured process of software architecture, with focus on how to deal with the aspects of and the interaction with the software developer(s). With functional architecture, the architecture is communicated to stakeholders and enterprise engineers."

Es existieren diverse Versuche solche Sprachen zu definieren. Nenad Medvidovic und Richard N. Taylor haben sich mit diesem Thema auseinandergesetzt und eine nützliche Übersicht [3] erstellt.

Oft gestellt ist die Frage nach der Definition der "Software-Architektur". Das amerikanische Software-Engineering Institute (SEI) der Carnegie-Mellon University [1] ist sich hier ganz sicher:"There is no standard, universally-accepted definition of the term, "software architecture," although there is no shortage of definitions, either. ". In dieser einfacher Antwort liegt die eigentliche Ursache des Problems. IASA [2] hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, einen Vorschlag zu erarbeiten und zu definieren:

What is the definition of software architecture?
What are the duties of a software architect?

Deutlich leichter dagegen ist ein Vergleich zu anderen Berufen zu ziehen. Als Anregung zum Nachdenken, hier ein Beispiel vom Conrad Whittaker: "What's the difference in a home built be an architect versus an engineer? The home built by the architect will fall down versus the people will demand that the home built by the engineer be torn down."

Das Berlin-Brandenburger Software-Forum ist eine Veranstaltungsreihe zu aktuellen Themen der Software-Entwicklung und des Software-Engineerings. Die Teilnahme an den Veranstaltungen ist kostenlos, da das Forum vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung im Rahmen des Projektes VSEK gefördert wird.  Obwohl ich schon seit der Gründung von VSEK ein aktiver Mitglied bin, kann ich leider nicht am Treffen teilnehmen - am 24.08. bin ich noch im Singapur...
